Xi En is ONE!

Xi En turns ONE today!!!!!

One year ago, at this every moment (920pm), I was in the hospital’s delivery suite waiting for Dr Lim to come in and tell me if Xi En was ok. I was strapped onto the CTG machine and confined to the delivery bed awaiting the ctg results to be stable before Dr Lim could released me back to the ward.

But of course, Xi En had chosen this day – 31st July 2009 – to be born! He was delivered by an emergency caesarean and rushed off to the neonatal ward immediately as he badly needed rescuitation………

All the above seemed just like yesterday’s matters. At a blink of eyes, today Xi En turns ONE YEAR OLD! To us, it is a big miracle that he was born and passed numerous tests to get to 1 year old.

We held a birthday celebration today to thank many of our relatives, families and friends who had supported us throughout the ordeal last year. Of course, the main reason is to celebrate Xi En’s birthday! :) But he probably won’t know much till he looked back at the photos next time! :)

Thank you everyone who came and thank you for all the presents and ang pows!

We are truly blessed! :)

Special thanks to Xiao Jiu & family for the usage of the function room and Poni for making the yummy chendol! And Terence, meiqi & Jiejin for helping with the deco! :)

And He had a GREAT fall …..

Xi En had his first fall (and hopefully last!!) a few days back. And it was largely my fault! Sigh… I wanted to rest on our cushiony big king size bed and so decided to let Xi En have his afternoon nap beside me. I woke up earlier and left the room with pillows and bolsters surrounding him as we had always done so.

Lo and behold, when we let down our guards, that’s when the accident happened! Mum, Kim and I were all in the living room and we heard a loud cry quite unlike his usual cry. I ran into our bedroom and found Xi En face down on the floor!!!!! I scooped him up immediately and he was in the most pathetic, scared and in-shock look I have ever seen.

My hands were shivering and my heart was pounding 100 times faster than usual. I felt so terribly guilty that I had allowed him to sleep on our custom-made 3.5 feet high bed frame/mattress. God’s protection must have really been on Xi En. Save for the shock and an initial bump on his left head/face, he was ok. We believed that he must have “flew” down with the bolster when he woke up and started crawling towards the edge of the bed.

Never.. never again..I told myself that we are going to allow him to be alone on our bed. It was a bad scare and lesson learnt! So now.. We created a safer corner on the floor for Xi En to sleep:

We have probably changed Xi En sleeping’s location for at least X times ever since he came home from the hospital:

1) Big cot placed in the living room for naps

2) Petite bassinet/play pen next to our bed

3) In between us on a baby mattress when he was really tiny

4) Yao-Lan (baby rocker) – Xi En’s favourite! (And ours too – ‘cos it allows him to nap really really looongggg!)

5) Big cot moved next to our bed (Didn’t last too long ‘cos our baby is really tall and loves to roll around the bed)

6) Two mattresses placed on the floor – our safest bet for now. He has since outgrew the yao-lan when he learnt how to flip and kick himself out of the net!

yaolan

For a while, we were thinking how we can wean him off the yaolan as he seemed too used to the rocking motion. But thankfully, he adapted quite well when we put him on the big mattresses. :)

Xi En has really grown taller and older – He is turning ONE tomorrow!!!!! It’s amazing how time really flies! :)

Lasik Experience

Finally I went ahead with my Lasik surgery after much procrastination. I had wanted to do it since 2 years back but held back when I discovered I was pregnant. Thereafter breastfed Xi En for 9 months and decided it was time to do something for myself! :) Well.. partly for Xi En as well (trying to find an excuse!) as I hated groping around for glasses at night when he starts crying. Furthermore, my degree of correction required was about 600 degree per eye. Enough to turn me into a blind bat without the aid of glasses/contact lenses.

So I took decided to JUST DO IT!!

Shortlisted the place and the doctor. Decided to go ahead with Singapore National Eye Centre and chose Dr Chua Wei Han upon recommendations from friends. Firstly, I had to go through a series of detailed eye examination in order to ascertain if I was a suitable candidate for Lasik.

Dr Chua said that I am! I asked him why so – and he said that as long as your cornea is thick enough to conduct at least 2 to 3 times of Lasik surgery, he will perform the surgery for me. So.. that is the definition… I was a little concerned (I don’t wanna go under the knife too many times!). He reassured me that generally after the operation, it will take at least 6 months for the eye sights to stabilise.

Anyway, I can’t be bothered anymore. Had been dreaming of being able to wake up and “see” my surroundings immediately. Nothing can deter me anymore. Thus I signed up for the actual surgery 1 week later.

Though I had read sufficiently about the procedures and after care and etc, I probably underestimated the surgery. Seriously, I thought it will be minimum pain and everything will be over in 5 mins. BUT after going through the entire process, I realised that I don’t quite like the feeling of having my cornea “flipped open” by a surgical tool. And the pain after the surgery can be liken to someone giving you a few heavy punches in your eyes!

Dr Chua reassured me that before long, I would have forgotten the pain and jump for joy for the prefect eyesight. Well.. that’s partially true. I didn’t quite forgotten the pain but yes, I love my new found perfecto eyesight!!!!

Pre Lasik, I was so dependent on contact lenses. Post Lasik, I felt so weird that I didn’t need to remove my contact lenses before bed! The joke is: once or twice, I forgotten that I had Lasik done and went in front of the bathroom mirror to do the usual take-off-contact-lenses-to-wash routine!

This is probably the best surgery I have ever done in my life! :) Loving my eyes now! :)
